Go Back to College – For Free
Back on September 5 of 2012 Brooke Allen sent an email to the NSoW mailing list inviting subscribers to join us in a free class. So many people wrote that we decided to post it as an article so they could add comments about their experiences.
Adrienne and I have just signed up for our first free course with the University of Pennsylvania through Coursera (http://www.coursera.org), which offers dozens of classes by top professors on-line, all completely free.
We are taking a class on gamification, which is about adding game-like elements to all sorts of activities that aren’t normally considered fun. Our most popular article of all time was our interview with gamification expert, Gabe Zichermann, on how to gamify the job search. See: JobsVille on our website, http://www.noshortageofwork.com. The class began last week and it is still excellent.
You can learn about the gamification course here: https://www.coursera.org/course/gamification
Although the class has already begun, there is still time to sign up and join us and the other 70,000 students.
Other courses include:
- Web Intelligence and Big Data (http://www.coursera.org/course/bigdata)
- Model Thinking (http://www.coursera.org/course/modelthinking)
- Digital Democracy (http://www.coursera.org/course/digitaldemocracy)
- Statistics (http://www.coursera.org/course/stats1)
- Computational Finance (http://www.coursera.org/course/compfinance)
- Poetry (http://www.coursera.org/course/modernpoetry)
- World History (http://www.coursera.org/course/wh1300)
- Reasoning and Argumentation (http://www.coursera.org/course/thinkagain)
- and many many more
You can see all their offerings here: https://www.coursera.org/courses
We hope to meet you all on line. If you sign up for the gamification class, or any of the others, please write and let us know.
Regards,
Brooke

If you are unemployed, you are autonomous. We help with purpose and mastery. If you are employed, find purpose in helping those who are not. NSoW is not a commercial venture; it is created by people who believe that creating something of intrinsic value is compensation enough. This course has been an amazing experience. It’s education on your own terms, and you don’t have to go into debt to get it.
Hi Brooke,
Thank you for sending me the information about Coursera. I did enroll in the gamification class and I am enjoying it tremendously. Not only that, I also noticed that Coursera is offering a class on human-computer interaction which focuses directly on interface design and should be very interesting.
I am totally amazed by the number of people enrolled in the class. Initially I thought I might run into you in the online forum, but it doesn’t look likely given the numbers. Maybe we’ll have a chance some other time to talk about it.
Thanks,
Margarete

Hi, Brooke. I signed up even though I know I don’t have time to take the course! But I’ll do what I can and look forward to hearing your reactions.
Thank you for the email. Sounds interesting, and I may attend. I welcome any similar emails on such classes/events.
Thanks so much for the information. I am taking the Machine Learning class from Andrew Ng at Stanford. Also I saw you are attending the Coursera Meetup on Monday. I hope to see you there and hear about Burning Man.
Why even bother going to college when you can bring college to you?! for slightly cheaper.
How does these courses work? Do they archive them all? Can you take the Gamification class whenever you want? all totally free?
The MIT/Harvard partnership and the site you sent seem to have some powerful stuff.
Dear Brooke, dear Adrienne,
Thank you so much for your creativity, your energy and your mails! The idea of coursera is most thrilling – and I already created my account and joined the first two courses:
1. Organizational Analysis, starting in Sept.2012,
and
2. Grow to Greatness Part 1, starting in Jan. 2013
What a perfect way to keep on learning on such a high level. I always dreamed of studying in Stanford, and now I will take a course there
Great!
Take good care, Brooke and Adrienne! Enjoy your time!
Kind regards from Düsseldorf
Christa
Thank you Brooke and Adrienne! I just heard about these free courses, wonderful!
Things are GREAT here, not sure if you saw my 5 min. TED Talk as part of their 2013 Talent Search, the voting is over, but here it is: http://talentsearch.ted.com/video/Kristin-Pedemonti-Bringing-joy;TEDNew-York
The book about my volunteer project and the stories I collected in Belize accepted for publishing, writing it in November and slated for release Sept 2013! Recorded a Live Storytelling CD, Superhero 101; Every Day Superheroes, should come out end of this month. Will be expanding my volunteer literacy outreach project to Nairobi, Kenya; Accra, Ghana and India in 2013. Doing Superhero Big Wheel Races as FUNDraisers,3 scheduled Sept/Oct. so far. I hope to do one in NYC in early May too!
And got invited to present at TEDx in Phoenxville and in Warsaw, Poland along with guest lecturing in Belfast end of October on Cross Cultural Communication Through Story.
Life is good! Hope all continues to be well with you and hope you were able to enjoy Burning Man again this year!
HUUUG!
HI Brooke, thank you for the email about this. This is interesting.
I’ve begun working with a consulting firm however by the name of Capital Markets Advisors and between that and 2 other businesses I’m starting, there’s not been a great deal of time.
Back to your event earlier in the year? May? or in the spring, the right moral compass is good and necessary on Wall street, however I spoke up,did the right thing and endured nearly 5 years of disemployment. So there has to be where we hire those who speak up,look out for those of us who push back against the tide of maggotry… and maggot/garbage business on wall street and in the
financial markets.
Thank you for that link … I have wanted to go to grad school, at Penn however for a Masters in Accounting.
