SUGGEST A LOGO FOR NO SHORTAGE OF WORK

No Shortage of Work began on April 28, 2009 when I spoke at the New York Chapter of a quantitative finance group (www.qwafafew.org).

Since most of our members have had at least a little bit of high school Physics, I designed this logo:

based on the equation: Work equals Force times Distance.

Jean, one of our members, responded:

As a former mathematician who liked Physics, here are a few of my own takes on your equation W= Fd:

W = Fd (Work is a transfer of energy! not what most people think of which is turning up for their day jobs) also

Work = Fd (Work is a Force causing displacement - which is a good thing as people need change!)

Work = Fun * diligence

Work = Focus * drive

Work = Fulfillment + iDentity

Jean understood. There is work all around us. We work every breathing second, and when we die, then the worms go to work.

However, as we began attracting people without a quantitative background, some people began to complain that the logo was alienating them.

So, I changed the logo to:

This logo had the disadvantage that EVERYONE (including me) hated it.

Some people wanted us to go back to the original logo on the theory that NSoW is about working and learning, and it might too be much to ask participants to master an equation with two variables and a multiplication, at least to the extent Jean presented it.

Others offered to create a new logo – but none has been forthcoming yet.

Should we go back to the original logo, have none, or invent a new one?

Please send us your suggestions, including proposed new logos.

We’ll make a decision by the end of 2010, I promise (unless we can’t make up our minds, or become distracted).

Thanks,

Brooke
