Bring your ideas for how you might:

  • Mentor a student
  • Partner with someone researching a market, writing an article, etc.
  • Be helped by students either independently or as a classroom project
  • Network with your peers

Date: Wednesday, July 21st. Arrive between 6:15 and 6:45 and expect to stay until 8:30.

Venue: Baruch College, 17 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10010 (You must RSVP at which time, you will be told the room number and put on the guest list at the front door.)

RSVP to: Patrick Bishop (Baruch Professor) at: bishopsjewels@yahoo.com

Bring your own food and drink (no alcohol, sorry) or eat before or after (there are plenty of good restaurants/bars in the area).

Among other things, we will discuss the following existing or planned projects:

100 First Days at Work. Very cool project to send 100 college students or career changers to spend a single day working (like an intern) at companies in their particular field and then report on the degree to which they felt their education had (or had not) prepared them for what they experienced in the real world. Although it is pitched as a journalistic exercise, you never know… NSoW is looking for people to step forward to work at these places as well as for places to send them.

Questions for Colleges. This site puts colleges on the spot by asking them for some accountability. To quote from the website: “Are colleges there for the students or are students there for the colleges?” We will give more details in person, but for now check it out here: http://www.questionsforcolleges.com/ Sign up. Post a question.

Rewrite This. This is still in the planning stage, but the gist of it is that you have an opportunity to demonstrate your writing and editing skills by taking someone else’s writing, rewriting it, and then showing it off. You’ll gain resume-building experience as an editor. If you have something of your own you’d like rewritten, submit it and someone else will re-write it for you. The original author retains copyright.

No Shortage of Work (NSoW). You know about this already, but at the meeting we will discuss how we can help you meet interesting people by doing book reviews or interviews for us, collaborating on projects, or publishing your original prose (as long as it is on topic).

Humongous Shortage of Work. Every protagonist needs an antagonist, and this is the parody site for NSoW. If you have a funny story to tell about job hunting, humorous advice on how to find work, or just want to rank on No Shortage of Work, this is the site for you. They’ve lost their lead writer to the Onion, so they need someone to get this going again.

We believe that every unemployed senior executive would be well served by teaming up with a student. Mentoring can work both ways, and having a partner in the job search can help with motivation, just as it helps to have an exercise buddy.
