THE PARTY WAS A SUCCESS
The Public House was very gracious last night. Although they said they would limit the open bar to the first 50 attendees, when asked at 6:00PM how many had signed up for free drinks, they said, “There are about 40 on a sheet, and you’re on your third sheet.” Not a bad turnout given the storm and that we had less than 2 weeks to publicize it. Before 6 we hung at the bar; later many of us headed upstairs to a private loft area.
We decided to do something a bit different so people could find each other more easily.
The fourteen people who volunteered to manage the event got “VOLUNTEER” tags.
Other tags included:
Mentor/Teacher - You were willing to mentor someone or teach a topic
Help Wanted - You, or someone you knew, had a job, an internship, or a project that could use some help.
Help Offered - You were available to work full-time, part-time – for pay or for free.
Whether you attended or not, you can always look for: a mentor, work, or help by submitting a notice to our subscribers HERE.
If you attended: Did you enjoy yourself? What did you think of the people you met? Would you like it if we did it again?
If you did not attend: Would you like an invitation next time? If you are not in the NYC area, would you like something like this closer to you? (And would you be willing to help organize it?)

Below are a few grainy shots Brooke took with his cell phone. Surely, someone has a few better shots.

Hello,
i wish you a lot of fun on this networkparty.
Greatings from Gemany
Angela ;o)
I enjoyed meeting the different variety of people. Everyone had a story to tell. Hopefully, the next event can be at a less noisy setting.
Despite a horrible snow-storm, I thought that there was a terrific turn-out. There was a larger number of extremely interesting people present, many of whom were involved in very interesting projects. I think that Brooke and his many assistants did a wonderful job of encourging a very friendly and helpful atmosphere. Thanks for all your hard work. I look forward to attending the next event, and suspect that the positive word of mouth that Friday’s party will generate will result in an even bigger turnout.
Great group of people, some with work and some with talent and some mentors/gurus – this should work!
Thanks for your efforts,
Douglas
Great event. I am looking forward to the next. Wide variety of industries presented. Can we also do a couple limited to specific businesses? Thank you all for coming.
It was great to meet such a wide variety of different people each bringing something different to the table. I was able to help and be helped in more effective ways than other events I’ve attended. Thanks a lot Brooke and the other volunteers for setting it all up.
Thanks Brooke and the volunteers for creating a great environment of people helping other people. I met many interesting contacts, and I felt inspired in my own job search. I will definitely recommend the group and networking events to my friends looking to network with others.
Please set up more events like this one!
I found the event to be a nice event and I was able to meet some very talented people. Also, I was able to put some people in contact with others who may be able to assist with information. I have one recommendation — try to select a venue that isn’t so loud and noisey because when you are networking, you want to be able to have good conversation with people and not having to scream in order to be heard. By the time I left, my ears were ringing and I had no voice left from screaming. Otherwise, I think it was a worth-while event.
Enjoyable event – nice diversity of people with similar interests. The venue was too noisy. The event may also benefit in the future from a posting of themes regarding needs, business development, industries.
Brooke and volunteers – thank you for organizing the meeting and facilitating introductions / process….
On Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm I was looking for an easy excuse not to leave my home in Jersey City and my shoveled out parking spot to attend the No Shortage of Work mixer. There was snow, lots of it, but I knew I would feel better if I went.
Here was an opportunity to meet new people, offer them what I knew and see if anyone had some insight as to what I need. I very much enjoyed myself and found many moments where I felt useful to someone and someone was useful to me. It was an open connecting environment and I look forward to more ways that this community of positive connections will evolve because I will evolve with it.
Thanks, Brooke, for setting up a great meet and being a great host. I was very much impressed with the caliber of people at this event. The room was dripping with talent. We could have started a couple of good companies with the diverse skills in the group. I for one felt it was good to mix things up with people outside my area of interest. Some of the best connections I made were with people who I never would have met at an industry specific event.
I agree that the venue was way too loud, even though it was otherwise a nice place, and the bartenders and other staff were friendly.
Looking forward to doing it again!
Ground-breaking, exciting, timely… just a few words to compliment Brooke and describe the networking event that took place Friday evening at the Public House in NYC. No Shortage of Work is a powerful concept; the event confirmed that. Bring together a group of people seeking something and the results will be unpredictable in a positive way. You may find what you are looking for, but more importantly you may find what you need even though you did not know you were looking for it. Bravo, No Shortage of Work!
I enjoyed meeting you all and learning a little bit about what you are up to. Thank you Brooke and everyone else for setting it up. Yes, it was loud. I lost my voice for a few hours the next day.
I met a few people that had backgrounds in financial engineering or programmers looking to learn more about equity research. I find you people really interesting for its a subject I would like to learn more about.
For these overqualified people, let me extend an invitation to you. If you would like to write an equity research report based on our approach and publish it on our website, I would be happy to offer some guidance including some hard copies of the models I use. Maybe you could find some ways to improve what I’m already doing, and maybe you will learn a little bit about equity research.
Thanks Brooke, it was a great turn out even in such harsh weather conditions.
We had a good mix of poeple from various industries, skills, hobbies and career aspirations. Was certainly a fruitful evening meeting. I sincerely think we should do this more often.
Who was here:
- Job creators ranging from founders of innovative startups to presidents of established firms
- Job seekers continuing their first, starting their second, or trying to discover their nth career
- Those with something to teach and those looking to learn
- Connectors helping to bring them together
In other words, a room full of “the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things.”
When they gather, do you belong in the room?
thanks brooke and crew for all the efforts. networking is the only way of the future and I LOVE THIS CONCEPT. the group and theme provided me with a whole new perspective on how to view the adventures of job search.
thank you and i look forward to more events.
Many thanks to Brooke and the volunteers for organizing the event! It was great to meet so many people from different disciplines and backgrounds. The enthusiasm was contagious. I also greatly enjoyed the discussion at dinner afterward — I’m checking out Couch Surfing for our upcoming European vacation.
Thanks again — let’s do it again soon!
Since I have heard Brooke speak about the No Shortage of Work concept, I have been eager to see the noble approach tested. In light of the high expectations I had, I was beyond impressed with Friday’s event & the people who attended it.
One of my aims in regards to NSoW events is to meet people I would otherwise have no business meeting; to widen my horizons on every level. Based on that criterion alone, I consider Friday a huge success and am very glad I met everyone that I did. I walked away with many new insights, contacts, and ideas on moving myself (and others) forward.
I cannot wait for the next one!
I’ve been to other NSoW functions and in my opinion this was the best so far. I think the bar atmosphere may have helped at the margin by making people a bit less inhibited. The group was comprised of a diverse range of participants including someone in web services, a CPA, an FX trader, a recruiter, a publisher, an attorney, a third-party marketer, a software developer, and many others. People were there for a variety of reasons. Some were looking for a job and some were looking to grow their businesses. Everyone seemed to be working the crowd pretty hard. I know that I gained some valuable contacts and I hope others did as well.
Well organized, well attended, in the middle of a snowstorm. Need I say more?
