No Shortage of Work Explained
No Shortage of Work promotes an idea that was expressed to me by someone (I forget who) on the morning of May 6, 1982 that goes something like this:
Never ever in the history of human endeavor has there been a shortage of work, and when the money dries up the work piles up.
I was unemployed at the time and felt terrible, as if I were of no use to anyone.
On that day I changed my orientation and concentrated on looking for work that needed to be done irrespective of the pay – work of the highest VALUE to OTHERS. Often, when people could not pay they were willing to let me develop my skills “on the job” as long as I was willing to work for free. During better times, had they had the budget to pay for the best, I would not have stood a chance. All the great advances in my career – everything that eventually took me to the next plateau – began as unpaid work or study.
Originally, NSoW concentrated on this theme.
Now our mission has expanded to address the needs of all people who are unemployed, underemployed, or just thirsting for more meaningful and valuable work.
No Shortage of Work has no revenue model because we don’t want anything in return – this website exists because I and the people who help build it think it is work that needs to be done for its own sake. We benefit by building our skills and exposure.
